Because we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10)

Our hearts desire, more than anything, a way to justify ourselves before God. We know, deep down, that something is wrong in our relationship with Him, and that problem is called sin. In this search to reconnect with God, the first solution that comes to mind is to do some type of work or sacrifice to make God accept us again.

Although this is an easy conclusion to reach, it is also useless and completely wrong. In this text, Paul makes it clear that our relationship with God occurs solely and exclusively through God’s grace.

This means that our works and sacrifices do not serve to find favor with God or to reconcile with Him. However, the apostle does not say that works are useless. In fact, works are central to the Christian life, and they are because God planned them in our lives before we were even created.

So, no work guarantees you anything before God. But from eternity, God has prepared works for you to carry out. Love your neighbor, pray fervently, care for the needy, read the Word. These are works prepared beforehand for you to practice. Everything you need from God has already been given to you by grace!

It’s time for you to get to work.

  • Are you trying to justify yourself before God? Recognize now that God’s grace is the only way you can please Him!

  • Don’t stay still; there is much work to be done. Love, recognize, help, and encourage your neighbor.

  • Share God’s grace with others.

To pray:

Lord Jesus, I thank You because through You I can enjoy divine grace. Help me to enter into the powerful presence of God every day, and may I find all my joy there. In Your name, Jesus, amen!
