Psalm 126:5-6

"Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy. Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them."

The "law of sowing" or the principle of planting is a concept frequently addressed throughout the Bible. Jesus taught many parables about the sower, the types of soil, and the seeds (like the mustard seed, for example). Paul also said (in Galatians 6:7) that "a man reaps what he sows." Because of these and other references, we understand that naturally, and in all areas of life, we reap what we sow.

Today's Psalm speaks of a different aspect of sowing. In fact, this is the only place in the Bible where a harvest is mentioned that is different from what was planted. Here, the law of sowing is surrounded by the grace and mercy of the Lord who sustains all things. God grants those who sow with tears (humility, trust, and contrition) to reap their sheaves full of joy (happiness, contentment, and satisfaction). Trust your seed to Jesus, who can transform a small seed into many sheaves. He can also turn your weeping into a celebration!

Although there may be tears and difficulties, sow the seed:

  • Sowing is related to trust. Entrust your plans to the Lord and trust that He will work.

  • Pray constantly to God, asking Him to sustain you and direct you in all the purposes of your life.

  • God makes things grow, but you need to plant. Be diligent and take heart!

  • After sowing in faith, pray and wait on the Lord with patience.

  • Ask for God’s guidance so that you always produce good fruit through the action of His Spirit in your life.

  • The Word of God is the good seed. Share the Gospel with those around you.

To pray:

Lord, help me to plant seeds with faith and hope in You. May I trust, knowing that You sustain all things, and I know that You sustain my life, my family, and all my dreams. Even when I cry, tired or weary from the struggles of life or the effort of work, help me continue planting good seeds. May these seeds produce good fruit that will bless many and bring glory to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
